Dinosaurs Seek Revenge

Dinosaurs Seek Revenge

Newspaper industry consultant John Morton, who heads Morton Research Inc., said he thinks many newspapers want to wean readers off free online content and transform their Web sites into paid-only publications...

Interesting discussion at Political Animal prompted by reports that the New York Times is considering a pay-to-play approach: "Without a copious supply of online newspapers and magazines providing the raw material, there are very few bloggers who would have anything left to say."

One of our local papers has been pay-to-play for some time and from what I've seen the Cedar Rapids Gazette isn't worth it. Recently they had a "free preview" of what they call their "E-Edition." Their theory is to that what web readers want is a godawful inconvenient interface designed to look like an old millenium printed newspaper! It shows an unbelievable misunderstanding of the differerence between print and electronic media.
