Sam Brownback set the expectation bar yesterday in a Washington Post chat:
Topeka, Kan.: Is it true that you will drop out of the race if you don't finish in the top 4 in Iowa?
Sen. Sam Brownback: That is correct. I need to finish in that group to move on forward.
Given the old saying "there are three tickets out of Iowa," that doesn't sound like much. But it would still require a big jump from his tied for eighth place, two percent standing in the latest Des Moines Register poll...
After Tuesday's debate, in which Ron Paul and Tom Tancredo both refused to pledge support for the Republican nominee, the Evans and Novak Report is picking up on what I've been saying for months: the realistic possibility of Ron Paul bolting the GOP.
"He equaled Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in fundraising, he does very well in most straw polls and he draws the loudest applause at the presidential debates. His base is very motivated, and it is ideologically diverse. Still, he barely registers in polls. His limited-government message is far more consistent than that of the other candidates, who push ethanol and farm subsidies. His anti-nation-building stand could have broad appeal, but he wanders off into monetary policy and foreign policy tangents. The threat to the GOP: An independent Paul candidacy is all the more real after he refused to pledge support of the nominee."
