Swisher proposes year-round school

Swisher proposes year-round school

Iowa City School board candidate Sarah Swisher is proposing a pilot program of year-round school in two of the district schools.

"As soon as August of 2010, Kirkwood Elementary School in Coralville and Grant Wood Elementary School in Iowa City should begin a year round calendar of operations," reads a release.

“It is time to promote year round programming in this district. This alternative calendar will serve as a magnet to attract students from other elementary schools and to retain students in challenged schools.”

Swisher says most year round schools function with a quarterly calendar with several weeks of break between each session. "At Polk Elementary in Cedar Rapids, the year round programming has resulted in unique private and public sector partnerships to create intensified academic and art programming during the 'intersession.'”

School board candidates meet for a forum tonight at 7 p.m. at the district offices.
