Morgan Leaves School Board Race

Incumbent Morgan Leaves Iowa City School Board Race

Iowa City school board incumbent Aletia Morgan has withdrawn for the Sept. 11 election citing personal and work commitments.

The filing deadline was last week, so three candidates remain on the ballot in the race for two seats: incumbent Gayle Klouda, Republican activist Deb Thornton, and relative unknown Michael Cooper of North Liberty.

This shuffles what had been expected to be a relatively partisan contest for a non-partisan office with the candidacies of Thornton and Morgan, an active Democrat and leader in the local John Edwards campaign.

The post-deadline withdrawal of Rich Lipman from last year's Iowa City school board race led to Sam Garchik's unsuccessful write-in candidacy.
