Local Legislators Get Set

Local Legislators Get Set

Session starts tomorrow and the P-C had a brief overview with Dvorsky, Mascher and Jacoby. Also, Joe Bolkcom publishes a weekly newsletter during the session on his site.

Lots of education funding talk, both K-12 and regents - this is Iowa City after all. And the cigarette tax should be hot. Anyone care for an over-under bet on what the increase lands at? Or would that be considered an expansion of gambling? Culver wants a dollar, Gronstal says it'll be less.

As for the hot buttons: "Dvorsky expects motions in removing stem cell research bans and English as the official language legislation."

National stuff: Hotline says that wide discrepancies in recent IA presidential polls may be explained more by list quality and screening or likely caucus goers than actual shifts in support. This points out a couple inherent problems in polling:

  • The "yeah, sure I'm gonna vote" response because people know they're Supposed To
  • The "None Of Your Damn Business" response

I feel another long post coming on sort of related to this...

And Jerome at MyDD discusses the GOP schedule and still has Iowa listed as January 21, a week after the Democrats...
