Across Iowa, hundred of volunteers - on both teams - are getting ready to hit the phones. Meanwhile, some jerks at the State Fair today got a bunch of headlines for yelling and shoving. We all have our role in the process I guess.
My role is to tell you about all the candidate filing excitement today. Martin Monroe is making another run for Congress in the 4th CD. The perennial independent, who seems to be running somewhere to the right of Steve King but left of Randi-Kaye: Shannon, won 1.8% in an uncompetitive 5th CD 2010 race. This year, with King in a tough fight with Christie Vilsack, expect the third party share to shrink.
Only one state legislative candidate turned in papers today. Republican Jim Steffen, nominated at a Friday convention, made it official against Democratic incumbent Jerry Kearns in House 83. That's likely to be the very last major party nomination; neither Democrats or Republicans have any conventions scheduled before Friday's deadline.
