Sad news: Former school board member Lauren Reece passed away yesterday after a long battle with breast cancer. She was only 52.
Lauren was elected in 1999 and 2002, stepping down in 2005. She chaired the board for a few years and was one of the leaders of the successful 2003 school bond vote that built Tate High School, North Central Junior High, and Van Allen Elementary.
Reece was also active in Democratic party politics and hosted one of my all-time favorite events: a 1999 tailgater for Bill Bradley at her home near Kinnick Stadium. She was well into the planning stages of a 2004 run for the Board of Supervisors when her health took a negative turn.
Services are tentatively scheduled for Thursday at Agudas Achim Synagogue. Condolences to Lauren's husband Michael Flaum, their children, and all of Lauren's family and friends.
