Filing Days Four And Five

A slow enough end to the first week of filing that I combined the last two days. Still no new filing above the legislative level.

Democrat Liz Bennett filed Friday in House 65, the seat former governor candidate Tyler Olson is leaving. She can expect a primary with Cedar Rapids school board member Gary Anhalt. The winner is favored in this good Democratic seat.

Spirit Lake Republican John Wills filed in House District 1 Friday. Kevin Wolfswinkel, who lost a 2012 GOP primary challenge to incumbent Jeff Smith, is also running; Smith is stepping down.

Walcott Republican Ross Paustian is making a comeback attempt. He lost in a top-tier challenge to Democrat Elesha Gayman in 2008, won when Gayman stepped down in 2010, then lost to Frank Wood last cycle.

The first two Fridays of filing season are usually slow, with the legislators out of town. There were a couple incumbents yesterday: Megan Hess, R-Spencer, for a second term in House 2, andPeter Cownie, R-West Des Moines, in House 42.
