Less Talk, More Food for Labor Day

The Iowa City Federation of Labor picnic has its usual surplus of food and solidarity, but far less political talk than usual.

Only one political speaker took to the microphone that was otherwise dominated by live music: former Lt. Gov. Patty Judge, who gave a short talk on behalf of Team Obama.

Plenty of political talk at the tables in Lower City Park, though; this wasn't a crowd that needed a lot of convincing for the Democratic ticket.

The local candidates settled for introductions from the stage; above is House candidate Dick Schwab with County Attorney Janet Lyness. Also on hand: House candidates Sara Sedlacek and Sally Stutsman, Rep. Mary Mascher, Supervisors Terrence Neuzil and Rod Sullivan, and Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek. And of course City Fed president Pat Hughes, seeking re-election as Oxford Township Trustee. Also spotted: the first batch of yard signs for the Justice Center campaign.
